Computing - Linux in China Receives Boost from US Chipmaker, PC Vendor
October 06, 2004
Intel has signed a contract with the Guangdong government-operated Linux Public Service Technology Center to build a laboratory and software-testing center in Guangzhou. The project is expected to stimulate the Linux software industry in Guangdong and speed up the formation of a local supply chain.

In July, IBM signed on to help with Linux technical support, entering an agreement with the Guangdong provincial government to establish a Linux technical support center. The center's primary purpose is to provide software R&D resources and testing services for Chinese companies.

Intel's decision to cooperate with the Guangdong government on Linux R&D is seen as a major victory for the province. The director of the Linux Public Service Technology Center stressed that the Intel framework would serve as the foundation for the future as they seek to further develop Linux software solutions.
